i turned 24 yesterday and now i have as many years as there are hours in a day. that got me thinking about time and how we use it and how we’re told to use it, especially at this age. but if there’s one thing i’ve learned since i turned 23 it’s that time is a fickle beast.

she sees you beg for a break and keeps moving. she hears you cry for quiet and keeps ticking. she feels you yearning for a memory or a dream and she dangles it just out of reach.

time is a cage and a clock and hot coal under our feet. telling us where to go and when to do it and how to tell the world we succeed. it’s brass bars, chimes on the hour and x’s crossed off each week. it’s the voice in your mind telling you you’re behind and there’s no way you can compete.

so we have to release it. you have to release it. you have to let yourself be free. 🦋

whether you’re trying to climb the corporate ladder, trying to find love, trying to be a good friend/parent/partner/spouse/etc, you’re trying. it’s not a competition. we’re all on our own paths, and they’re winding all over the place.

there are only 24 hours in a day. use at least 1 of them to give yourself a break.
